Update on Homecoming and W&M Weekend

Tuesday, July 7, 2020

Dear Alumni and Friends,

As the pandemic continues with increasing numbers of cases and great uncertainty, we are evaluating our fall programming carefully. Students arrive on campus next month and facilities are being adapted to accommodate their return. Safeguarding the health and safety of everyone in our community and doing our part to slow the spread of COVID-19 is our highest priority.

Homecoming & Reunion Weekend is our biggest signature event of the year and is an annual favorite for so many of us. It draws thousands of alumni family and friends to campus to reconnect and celebrate. Consistent with President Rowe’s Path Forward: Fall 2020, campus gatherings will be subject to public health guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Virginia Department of Health and the governor. After thoughtful consideration, deliberation and consultation with the university and the William & Mary Alumni Association Board of Directors, we have made the difficult decision to forgo hosting Homecoming & Reunion Weekend in person this year.

With that in mind, we are moving elements of the weekend online and will postpone others until we can gather safely together again. We are still in the planning phases, but key components of the weekend, including the Sunset Ceremony, will take place virtually. The Alumni House dedication will move to next year at a date and time yet to be determined. We also want to ensure our reunion classes have an opportunity to celebrate together. As updates are available, they will be posted on the Homecoming & Reunion Weekend website.

We have also rescheduled William & Mary Weekend in San Francisco from this September to June 10-13, 2021. While we were looking forward to seeing you this Labor Day, moving the event to late spring gives us a better chance to fully enjoy this remarkable weekend with as many William & Mary alumni and friends as possible. More information is available on the W&M Weekend website. We hope you will mark your calendars and plan to join us.

Thank you for your support and flexibility as we navigate the challenges of this difficult time together. Be well and stay safe.

With warmest regards,
