John Riofrio, or “Rio” as he is known, is an Associate Professor of Latino and Hispanic Studies at the College of William and Mary. Rio obtained his Ph.D. in English with a minor in Latin American Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008. Rio’s area of research is contemporary Latino/a issues with a particular focus on the role of public discourse and popular culture in the construction of Latino/a communities. In February of 2015 Rio received the Thomas Jefferson Award for Outstanding Teaching and in October 2015 Rio celebrated the publication of his book Continental Shifts: Migration, Representation and the Struggle for Justice in Latin(o) America. Rio was also named one of the inaugural fellows for the Center for the Liberal Arts as well as one of the inaugural fellows in the Reveley Interdisciplinary Fellows Program.
