Society of 1918

The Society of 1918 is committed to growing the engagement, leadership and philanthropy of W&M women to achieve a level of impact, influence and generosity commensurate with their majority representation in the alumni community.

When the society was founded one of the first actions was to create an endowment that would support lifelong engagement and leadership opportunities for W&M women. To that end, the Alumnae Initiatives Endowment was established to enrich W&M women’s throughout the country and provide exclusive programming for members of the Society of 1918. The endowment is unique in that it is funded almost exclusively by and for women. Read an interview with Matthew T. Lambert, vice president for university advancement, about women and philanthropy at William & Mary.

Membership in the Society of 1918 has grown to more than 350 women. Membership is offered to all women who  contribute $10,000 over a 5-year period ($2,000/year) to the Alumnae Initiatives Endowment. Read more about the beginnings of the society.
