Facebook Group FAQs

Q: What is happening with the W&M Regional Facebook Pages?

A: Currently, W&M chapters and regions have Facebook Pages. Pages are limiting because only administrators can post content and that content isn’t emphasized by the Facebook News Feed algorithm. With these conditions in mind we’re creating W&M Regional Facebook Groups to supplement the current W&M Regional Facebook Pages.

Q: What is a Facebook Group?

A: Facebook Groups promote content and allow anyone in the regional community to post. There will be Group rules posted in a public area on the Group allowing content to be removed if deemed necessary. W&M Regional Facebook Groups and Pages are a resource for W&M alumni, parents, family and friends. The primary goal of the Group is to share official W&M news and events, but alumni, parents, family and friends also should feel comfortable using the Facebook Group as a way to source and share needed information and advice, meet fellow alumni, and sell items. We encourage Group members to participate and engage by posting, commenting and interacting with others, and expect that remarks will be on‐topic and respectful of the rights and opinions of others.

Q: Will Pages go away?

A: No, we will continue to use the official W&M Pages for events and official W&M responses.

Q: Who will moderate the Group?

A: Alumni Engagement and other Advancement staff will moderate the Group. If a regional volunteer leader is responsible for social media, we will provide additional training and grant them access to also moderate.

Q: What are the rules for the Group?

A: Group moderators reserve the right, but are not obligated, to remove posts or comments that are racist, sexist, abusive, profane, violent, obscene, spam, that advocate illegal activity, contain falsehoods or are wildly off‐topic, duplicate, or that libel, incite, threaten or make ad hominem attacks on members of the W&M community, guests or other individuals. Additionally, Group members should have a resource (a person) who they can report comments or posts that make them uncomfortable.

Q: How will people find out about the new Facebook Group?

A: We cannot migrate all of the people who have “Liked” the page in the past immediately over to the Group. They must opt‐in by joining the Group. The Alumni Engagement team will send messages notifying people who “Liked” the Page of the new group. Additionally, the Alumni Engagement team will create posts on the region’s Facebook Page that say the region is now also using a Facebook Group for communication amongst members. We will link to the new Group from the Page for easy access.

Q: How can I help communicate the change to alumni?

Another way to spread the word is to invite William & Mary alumni, parents, family and friends in your area to join the Group.

Q: How should I promote W&M content in the Group?

A: Groups allow anyone who is a member to post a message visible to the whole group. Please share interesting posts from other William & Mary pages. Pages can be found by searching by name (see below) and then clicking “Pages” across the top menu bar or by searching in W&M’s social media directory.

Content can be easily shared from the following William & Mary Facebook pages:

  1. William & Mary
  2. William & Mary News
  3. William & Mary Tribe Athletics
  4. William & Mary Alumni Association
  5. William & Mary Women
  6. Impact William & Mary

Q: Who should I contact if I have questions about Facebook Groups?

A: Please contact Regional Engagement at engagement@wm.edu if you have any questions.
