
Catherine will be the Faculty Host and Lecturer for Dutch Waterways, April 11-19, 2026.
Catherine Levesque is a professor at the College of William and Mary where she teaches early modern European art. Her area of expertise is in Netherlandish paintings and prints from 1400-1700, and her scholarship focuses primarily on landscape imagery from that time. She has edited a volume of the Illustrated Bartsch (vol 6: Commentary) and published two books, Journey Through Landscape: Dutch Identity and the Haarlem Print Series (Pennsylvania University Press) and Jacob van Ruisdael’s Ecological Landscapes (Amsterdam University Press) as well as several articles on the role of print culture for understanding the seventeenth-century significance of native scenery and also on the work of Joos de Momper, Gilles van Coninxloo, Pieter Bruegel, and Hercules Segers.
